De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of wrist. It is characterized by inflammation of the tendon sheath, causing pain and swelling. Tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis in 1st extensor compartment are inflamed. Wrist movements are painful. Weight bearing activity are painful. Treatment consists of rest, ice application, analgesics, splinting and activity modification. Corticosteroid injection locally in the tendon sheath is given for patients not responding to conservative trial. These injections decreases the inflammation and gives pain relief. Some patients may require open release of the first extensor compartment and debridement of the tendon sheath.
